Councilman wants soccer field in Astoria Park
At Councilman Costa Constantinides’s State of the District speech on Monday at P.S. 122, the Astoria native proposed to convert the center of the Astoria Park running track into a FIFA regulation-sized soccer field.
“By building a real soccer field here, we’ll be able to give everyone a space in which to play without interfering with other park goers,” Constantinides said. He plans to regulate the park’s activity using time slots.
The $3 million investment, he said, can potentially be a site for tournaments and other high-profile games.
“I believe this space presents a wonderful opportunity for the community to play the world’s game in the world’s borough,” he said.
